Today's Scripture:
Luke 14:28
"For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?."
Today's Inspiration:
Like today's memory verse, Proverbs 27:23-27 also commands the wise person to "know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don't last forever..." Knowing the condition of our finances isn't suggested, but is expected of the person who wants to pursue God's righteousness and live by His wisdom.
To live by faith in God does not mean to live without awareness of our circumstances, our finances, or our property; it does not mean that we do not try to leave an inheritance for our children and our grandchildren (see the rest of Proverbs 27:23-27). Proverbs 21:5 commends the man who plans ahead diligently, and Jesus, in the parable of the talents, expects His servants to plan and multiply His investment. He condemned the servant who squandered his time and resources (the talent). Likewise, if we squander our time and resources, how can we expect God to provide? We must first be good stewards of God has already given us, or we cannot expect Him to entrust us with more.
Take a moment to think of these three scenarios - is this man wise or foolish?
- Says he trusts God to keep him healthy but stays up late, eats unhealthily and smokes
- Says he trusts God to give him safety as he drives his car, but speeds and tailgates
- Says he trusts God to provide for his needs but spends impulsively, fails to plan for the future, lives with growing debt
Why budget?
Budget so you can succeed in your plans (Luke 14:28-30) Budget so that you can be generous and give to God and others (1 Corinthians 16:2) Budget to honor God with the best of your resources (1 Corinthians 10:31) Budget to set spiritual discipline (establish boundaries to keep you from overspending, impulse-spending, or spending for self-gratification)
